You can write a technically perfect SQL query and still deliver the wrong business answer. That is one of the realities analysts often discover after entering the workplace.
Consider a simple request: Show monthly revenue by customer.
The query may be straightforward. But what does “revenue” actually mean? Is it invoiced revenue? Collected revenue? Net revenue after cancellations? Revenue recognized during the month? Should refunds be deducted? Should internal transactions be excluded?
The database can return a precise number for any of these definitions. Only the business rule determines which number is meaningful.

Training often focuses on whether your SQL syntax is correct or your Power BI model works properly.
Corporate reporting introduces another layer:
What does the business actually mean by the metric?
Two analysts can use technically correct queries and produce different results because they applied different assumptions. That does not necessarily mean one query is wrong.
The underlying business definition may simply be unclear. This is why experienced analysts ask questions before finalizing the report:
- What exactly does this KPI represent?
- Who owns the definition?
- Which transactions should be included?
- Are there exceptions?
- Has the definition changed over time?
These questions may feel less technical than writing SQL. They are often more important.
Corporate Reality Check:
A perfect query can produce a perfectly accurate answer to the wrong business question. The strongest analysts therefore do more than manipulate data. They understand the rules behind the numbers.
Because in real reporting, technical accuracy is only useful when the business meaning is accurate too.
