A candidate presents a polished dashboard. The interviewer looks at it and asks, So what would the business actually do with this finding? Silence.
The dashboard may have excellent visuals. The data may be clean. The DAX may be impressive. But the project has just exposed a weakness. It demonstrates technical ability without demonstrating business judgment.
Consider a sales analysis showing that one region has a 15% decline in revenue. A portfolio project might stop there.
A stronger analyst asks. Who needs to act on this?
- The Sales Manager may need to investigate customer coverage.
- Finance may need to understand the margin impact.
- Operations may need to check product availability.
- Senior management may need to decide whether resources should be reallocated.
Now the finding has a purpose. The difference is subtle but important. A portfolio project should not only demonstrate:
Here is what I found. It should demonstrate: Here is what I found, why it matters, who should care, and what decision it could influence. That is what separates a dashboard demonstration from an analytical project.
During an interview, this becomes even more important.
An interviewer may not care that you used five advanced DAX functions if you cannot explain why the analysis mattered.
They may care more about whether you recognised an assumption, challenged an unusual result, considered alternative explanations or identified the person responsible for acting on the insight.
Portfolio Stress Test - Before adding another chart to your project, ask:
- Who would act on this finding?
- What decision could it influence?
- What would happen if the finding were ignored?
If your project cannot answer those questions, the problem may not be the dashboard. It may be missing the business judgment that makes the analysis valuable.
A strong portfolio doesn't just prove that you can build something. It proves that you understand why the business should care.
