Why Good Analysts Ask Better Business Questions?
Published on 23 Jul 2026
I once watched two analysts build dashboards from the same dataset.
The first analyst immediately started creating charts. The second analyst asked,
What decision is this dashboard supposed to help someone make? That one question changed the entire conversation.
The difference between an average analyst and a trusted analyst is not how many DAX functions they know.
It's the quality of the questions they ask before writing the first line of code.
I have seen reports that looked impressive but were rarely opened after the first week. Not because they were poorly designed, but because they answered questions nobody in the business was actually asking.
Good analysts don't begin with data. They begin with context.
- Who will use this report?
- What problem are they trying to solve?
- Which KPI influences their decisions?
- What action should they take if a number changes?
Those questions shape everything that follows.
The most valuable analysts are not the ones who build the most dashboards. They are the ones who help the business make better decisions.
Technology can generate charts. Only a thoughtful analyst can uncover the questions that truly matter.
Before opening Power BI, Excel, or SQL, pause for a moment.
The quality of your analysis will rarely exceed the quality of the questions you ask.
