The CEO Wants One Number for How Is the Business Doing?

The CEO Wants One Number for How Is the Business Doing?

I have sat in meetings where every department proudly presented its dashboard.

- Sales said the pipeline was strong.

- Finance said margins were under pressure.

- Operations celebrated on-time delivery.

- Customer Support talked about satisfaction scores.

- Marketing highlighted lead growth.

After listening for twenty minutes, the CEO asked a simple question. So... are we doing well or not? The room went quiet. Not because people didn't have data.

Because everyone had a different version of the truth. This happens more often than we admit.

As companies grow, dashboards multiply. Every team creates KPIs that matter to them. Over time, leadership ends up looking at dozens of numbers without a single view of overall business health.

More dashboards don't always create more clarity. Sometimes they create more debate. The best executive dashboards I've seen don't try to show everything.

They answer one question first.

Is the business healthier today than it was yesterday?

Everything else should explain why that answer changed. Executives don't need more reports. They need faster decisions.

And that starts with one number the entire leadership team trusts.

If your CEO walked into a meeting today and asked, How is the business doing? would every department point to the same KPI?
